DICC Universiti Malaya was pleased to welcome a delegation from Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) for a benchmarking and knowledge-sharing visit focused on High-Performance Computing (HPC) deployment and operations. 🤝💻
The visit was part of USIM’s effort to explore and plan the development of its own HPC infrastructure to support future research, AI, machine learning, data analytics, and other compute-intensive workloads.
During the session, DICC shared practical experiences from UM’s HPC journey, covering areas such as:
- 🖥️ HPC infrastructure architecture and deployment planning
- ⚡ GPU and compute resource planning
- 💾 Storage and high-speed networking requirements
- ⏳ Job scheduling, queue management, and multi-user access
- 📊 Infrastructure monitoring and resource utilisation
- 🔐 User management, governance, and operational practices
- 📈 Capacity planning and future scalability
The discussion also touched on important considerations when starting an HPC environment, including hardware selection, supporting infrastructure, system management, technical expertise, user requirements, and long-term sustainability.
It was a valuable session with plenty of technical discussion and experience sharing. 💡 DICC was happy to share lessons learned from managing UM’s research computing infrastructure and the practical considerations involved in building and operating an institutional HPC environment.
